Does Mirena IUD Cause Elevated Iron Levels?

Well I have had the marina iud for nearly 2 1/2 years now and have recently been wondering if it has been the cause of my high iron levels and hair loss. I realized that this only started happening 4 months after I had the iud placed. Do you think this could be due to having the iud?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The increased level of iron in the blood (hemochromatosis) is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation in genes , this mutation leads to more absorption of iron in the gastrointestinal tract.

As we know women lose iron by menstruation.

Merina IUD is a hormone releasing IUD which can be a trigger factor by the amenorrhea caused by the Levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine system used for contraception. So the woman will not lose iron as usual and that leads to elevated level of iron in the blood.

You need to see your doctor to do more tests to confirm the hemochromstosis and to see if there's an indication to remove the IUD.

Hope I answer your question

Best regards

Dr.Noor Farid
