Does Namenda Cause Agitation And Mood Swings?

My husband(88 yrs old) started Namenda 7mg and has taken for 6 days. He has been sleeping a lot during the day and making strange noises. he has also become short tempered and irritable. Should I wait and continue with the next strength 14mg. ? Some say you have to take a med. for a few weeks to get used to it?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Namenda is composed of 'memantine'. It is used to treat moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer's type. Common Namenda side effects may include: diarrhea, dizziness and headache. It is not known to cause agitation and mood swings as side effects. I would like to advise to get a Neurologist opinion in this regard for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
