Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Doctor I have offered a femle aquaintance aged 40, some temporary accommodation until she finds a new premises. At the same time I have noticed that she drinks quite regularly and takes Paracetamol/Codiene while she drinks. I am concerned of the effects of this combination particularly whilst in my home. Should I be concerned. I have never experienced this type of addiction before. Should I alert my local GP. Please advise.
paracetamol and codeine are analgesic drugs, that is drugs to relieve pain. When used in combination each one enhances the analgesic effects of the other. Using codeine for a long time (particularly at a high dose) may cause addiction. If your friend only takes 1 pill per day then it would be very strange if she were addicted to it.
Drinking alcohol with opioids (like codeine) may potentiate the suppressive effects of the opioids on the central nervous system. It all depends on the dosage. If it's only a table of low dose codeine then no serious harm can be done. Otherwise it could be a reason for concern.
Regarding alcohol consumption, signs of severe addiction may include drinking inappropriately for example as an eye-opener in the morning or just before driving or going to work, trembling when abstaining from drinking for more than a few hours, inability to control it once she's started drinking, etc
I hope you find my comments helpful! You can contact me again, if you'd like any clarification or further information.
Kind Regards!
