Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello; I have a defribillator and I am in need of getting some teeth pulled. I take blood pressure medicine and a blood thinner I am wondering if there could be a problem with that. I know I have to be off the plavix at least 4 or 5 days before the surgery. Would this procedure be better for an oral surgeon?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Plavix is basically an anti-platelet drug which itself is a kind of blood thinner. If it's taken with some other blood-thinning medicine like aspirin or warfarin, etc., then the blood-thinning effect is increased leading to increase in bleeding tendency.
You are right Plavix should be stopped for 5 to 7 days before dental extraction. Yes it's better to get the procedure done by a dental surgeon.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Navneet Mahajn
