Does Prednisone Cause Hair Loss?

I am taking Apo Hydroxiquine for Polymyalgia. I ve been taking it for half a year. I ve lost half of my amount of hair and am still loving lots of it. Is it because of this medication or the Prednisone I m taking? About a half year ago I was taking 40 mg. of Prednisone. This week I m down to 5mg. Which one is causing hair loss?

Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HCM.
I appreciate your concern for the safety of the medications prescribed for Polymyalgia.

Well, it is Hydroxychloroquine that is mainly responsible for your hair loss.

Consultation with your treating doctor or a dermatologist may be helpful to make sure there is not some other reason for the hair loss such as:
iron deficiency
lupus
thyroid disease
There is no specific treatment for the hair loss that occurs secondary to medication except for discontinuing.
Once the medication is discontinued, or with time, the shedding will gradually resolve over 6-9 months.

Hope this answers your query.
I find this answer helpful
