Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Over the summer I had a blood test done because I was going to get Lamisil for a toenail fungus. When the results came back they told me that my AST=48 and ALT=76. I told them I was using Vicodin/Acteamenophin for back pain and they suggested I go off the vicodin and re-take then blood test and I never did. Last week I went to my PCP for my annual check up and he informed me that my AST=52 and ALT=145. I still had been using the Vicoodin for up until last week. Could the vicodin actually cause my resuts to be this high? I have to go back in a month for a retest, I am completely going to stop any vicodin, advil and will not drink any alcohol.
Vicodin is a combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Acetaminophen can produce liver injury which is often dose related. If you stop Vicodin and other medicines containing acetaminophen and if the retest shows a decrease in AST and ALT, then the elevation was likely to be related to Vicodin. If these persist, then other causes have to be searched for.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Noble Zachariah, Internal Medicine Specialist
