Does A Change In Menstrual Pattern Indicate Pregnancy?

Hello. I was wondering if there could be a chance that I d be pregnant. My period are fairly on time however this past period, I had a bit of spotting the first day. The 2nd and 3rd day I ve had medium flow. I thought that it was done and it had stopped for about half a day. Then I started spotting again for close to 3 days. I have ovarian cyst (I was told it benin after having blood tests and an MRI done last summer). Its been a while that I feel bloated and I sometime fell like a burning/streching sensation other times I feel like a pressure on my uterus. I was wonder if all this could be due to my cysts or could I be pregnant. Thank youfor you help

Hello,

As you had your menstrual period, the chance of you being pregnant is very meagre. If you have doubt, you can carry out urine pregnancy test at home.

Regarding ovarian cyst, if the size of it is too large that your abdomen is distended, then only we can attribute symptoms of bloating, stretching to it. Or else, those symptoms might be due to gastric irritation or peptic ulcer.

Anyhow, the following are recommended in case of abdominal bloating due to peptic ulcer:

1) Tablet Pantoprazole once daily before food for 14 days.

2) Any antacid can be taken. Even if your problem persists after 2 weeks of the above treatment, you need to go for an ultrasound abdomen and pelvis to rule out any increase in size of the cyst.

One of my patients, an 18 year old girl was diagnosed with ovarian cyst of small size and asymptomatic.

In a span of 8 to 10 months, she returned to my clinic with abdominal distention (almost like a 5 months pregnant) and bloating, stretching feeling.

We did an ultrasound to discover a drastic increase in the size of the cyst. Of course we had operated and removed it without any complications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi.m
