Does Antibiotic Shot Cause Swelling In Knee In Infant?

hi Dr. what can be the cause if the 1 month old baby is having swollen knee and is having pain when trying to straigten his leg . He is always keeping his leg in folded position. His same leg was used to give him some antibiotics when he was sick using the canula ( IV set ) in his feet . Is that the reason . His right knee looks bigger then his left knee . please advise .

Hi,

When was the canula removed (if it was more than 1 week before, need not worry about)? An IV canula in feet is very unlikely to cause swelling at knee. If at all it was related to canula, swelling will first appear around feet and then climb up. Here we have to rule out an important condition called septic arthritis of knee (bacterial infection of the knee joint fluid)- this an emergency needing immediate workup and treatment to avoid permanent joint damage. So please take him to an orthopedist without delay. You may be asked for few blood tests and an X-ray. Meanwhile, give him paracetamol to relieve pain.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
