Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Do any of these medicines contain harmful steroids ? Defort 6 mg, prugo 10 mg and hh salic ointment? Is it safe to take them for 1 month. They are showing good response to my skin itching and psoraisis like patches. I am concerned about the long term effect. Notjing else has worked for last two years
Hi there, Prugo is an antihistamine (anti-allergic) medicine that is not a steroid. The active ingredient in HH Salic ointment is salycilic acid which helps remove scales in paoriasis - it is not a steroid. I couldn't find information on the drug "defort". If you mean "Defcort" then this is a steroid since its is the trade name for deflazacort. The safety of any steroid medication depends on its dose, duration of treatment and the way in which it is ceased - you need to gradually wean off steroid if they are taken for more than a couple of weeks. In any case, it is very rare for us to treat psoriasis with oral (taken by mouth) steroids and I would not usually recommend this sort of treatment. On the other hand, steroid creams are a mainstay of psoriasis therapy.
