Does Dizziness And Head Pain Caused By Injury Need ER Attention?

Hi, I just came home from a basketball tournament. While i was playing a girl shoved me and I fell backwards and hit the left backside of my head. After I fell, I tried to get up but i was off balance and a little dizzy. Immediately after hitting my head it hurt in the back but the pain then went to the front right side of my head to. Now I am at home with a slight headache in on the front part where it hurt. Should I go to the ER or not?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. The immediate headache with dizziness can occur with both mild and dangerous head injury. We have differentiate between two. There are few other signs which suggest dangerous head injury. you have to observe them

: vomiting
: persistent headache not responding topic killers
: fits
: onset of new focal deficit
: loss of consciousness for more than 5 minutes
: bleed through nose/ear/throat
: dizziness with vertigo, confusion, sleepiness

If you or your family member notice any of above sign, consult ER as soon as possible. The doctor will evaluate you and advise CT head to rule out fracture or bleed. The fracture is usually managed by medical treatment while bleed may require surgery.

If there is no above sign and you are having only headache with mild dizziness, you can wait at home. For relief, you can follow few tips -

: Apply icepacks at injury site
: Keep your head at higher level than chest
: You can take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription. It will reduce pain and swelling both
: Avoid pressure at injury site.
: IF still no relief, you can consult doctor.

Hope it will help you. Thanks. Take care.

Hello
You've sustained a concussion here.

Since I can't examine you the best thing to do is see a doctor right away for an exam and to see if skull and neck x-rays are warranted to rule out any fractures
