Does Emergency Contraceptive Pills Cause Intermenstrual Bleeding?

I had my period on the 3rd June and I took the emergency contraceptive pill on the 9th after my period had finished. I had bleeding on the 19th June so roughly a week after taking the pill. Is this normal? It s 2 weeks early for my period.. But it s red blood- not brownish or pink. I have had no symptoms of pregnancy. Is this just a side effect of the pill?

Hi,

Yes, emergency contraceptive pills can cause such bleeding. The emergency contraceptive pills are generally well tolerated by most of the women.

However, they may have their period later or earlier than normal, some may have irregular bleeding or spotting until your next period.

Since you seem to behave unusual prolonged bleeding you should contact your doctor as soon as possible for further evaluation and treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
