Does Having Hyperthyroidism Affect Chances Of Getting Pregnant?
Hi, I am trying to get pregnant, but I just found out that I have hyperthyroidism. Are all of the medications taken for this safe to get pregnant on, what are my options, should I wait to get pregnant until my thyroid hormone levels (I really don t want to wait any longer) are within normal ranges or just be watched more frequently during my pregnancy.
Welcome to HCM. I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
All the anti thyroid medications are in category C in pregnancy. Category C drugs are drugs that has to be taken "with caution" in pregnancy, there are risks, but the benefits of the medications out weighs the risks.
When you are having hyperthyroidism, it is better to control hyperthyroidism and then plan for pregnancy as if you get some side effects of medication, it will be difficult to have alternative treatments (surgery/ radio iodine treatment) during pregnancy.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
