Does High TSH Level During Pregnancy Affect The Baby S Brain Development?
Hi I am 6 weeks pregnant.I was diagnosed TSH 6 in April 4,2014 and my LMP is 24 April 2014.I tested my TSH again when I am 5 weeks pregnant and it came 9.4.My doctor advised me to ake Thyroxin 50 regularly one at the morning.I am taking the same.Since I have started to take the thyroid medicine from 5th week of my pregnancy,so I am worried whether my thyroid level would have hampered my baby s brain development for the early 5 weeks of my pregnancy. Please help me on my query. Many Thanks.Sharmistha Sen
Hi, Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Don't worry. The IQ in infants born to mothers with subclinical hypothyroidism and normal mothers is not that different. Maximum difference in IQ is up to 8 points. That is the reason even if you have frank hypothyroidism, we won't advice you to do medical abortion.
Most probably the T3 and T4 in you will be normal. This amount of hypothyroidism can increase your risk of abortion. So have regular check up every month with thyroid function tests and keep your TSH below 2.5 miu/ml.
The chance of frank mental retardation or IQ less than 70 is very rare in maternal hypothyroidism. This is because if thyroid hormone levels in mother is low that will result in an abortion rather than a mentally retarded child. So if you get a term baby , the child's IQ will be good.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help With warm regards, Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM) Consultant Endocrinologist.
