Does Injured L4 And L5 Cause Extreme Pain And Difficulty In Standing Up?

I have recently been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. I had an MRI today. from the CT scan the doctor I am seeing says L4 and 5 are affected. I have been struggling with the pain and have difficulty standing for long periods of time. I have just started PT. my doctor says that I should not be in the amount of pain I am describing. I have tried all the medications they have prescribed to me but the only one that helps is a narcotic and that only helps for about an hour and a half. I don t know how I can make her understand I am not lying about the pain to get drugs. do you have any suggestions?

Hi,

Yes, a degenerated disc causes severe unbearable pain and radiculopathy. The best remedy is physical therapy which you have already started.

Yes, at times only narcotics work and nothing else. Continue round the clock analgesics and apply analgesic gels and sprays. Do hot fomentation with a hot water bottle and use a hard bed.

I start drug gabapentin but it causes a bit of dizziness and vertigo. Loading doses of vitamin B12 and anxiolytics are also very helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
