Does Nerve Blocking Treat Shingles, Medicine Has Not Worked?
My Uncle has had shingles for over two years. He is 80 years old. He has been on all the meds for trating shingles with no relief. I found info about cutting or getting a shot that blocks the nerve. He is ready to give up on life.
Hi Dennis, Thanks for writing to us. It seems your uncle has post herpetic neuralgia where severe pain persists in area of herpes zoster affliction. We usually manage it with pain killers like ibuprofen or tramadol, other drugs like pregablin, gabapentin, carbamazepine, amytryptalline etc. If no response is seen we may use therapies like TENS( nerve stimulation), intralesion injection of cocktail of drugs like triamcinolone, lignocaine etc or sympathectomy(nerve transection). You need to visit a pain clinic or anaesthetist to look for the best treatment option in your uncle's case. Hope this helped. Take care
