Does Orange Tint On Hands/feet In A Child Indicate Vitamin Deficiency?

Hi, My 5 year old son is a very picky eater. He eats only about 5-10 things. His favorite food is elbow noodles with pasta sauce. He will eat this 2-3 times a day. He also likes pizza, lasagna, yogurt, crackers, stuffed shells, bread and french fries. That s about it. I have noticed that his hands and feet have an orange tint to them. Could this be a vitamin deficiency? Or maybe he is eating so much pasta sauce that he is starting to turn orange :) What do you think?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

What about his eye balls- also coloured? Any discolouration of urine too? Orange / yellow discolouration can suggest jaundice or carotenosis. In jaundice, eye balls and urine also turns yellow. Carotenosis occur if food items containing carotenoids are taken excessively for longer (cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, carrot, cucumber etc).

Kindly discuss with your pediatrician for appropriate evaluation. Jaundice needs detailed workup, while carotenosis needs nothing other than reducing dietary carotenoids.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
