Does Post Polio Syndrome Cause Dementia?

Hi, my father is 80 and contracted polio when he was 17. He recently fractured his ankle in his good foot and has been in a nursing home. He has developed dementia within the last 3 weeks that has gotten to the point of not being able to carry on a conversation with him. He knows people and dates. MRI did not show significant damage to go along with actions. A neurologist has now ordered more bloodwork and is thinking this could be something else. They are doing a spinal tap tmrw and have started him on a steroid for 5 days. Have you ever heard of dementia being a post polio syndrome disease? Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Dementia may not be observed post polio syndrome it may affect the motor neurons of spinal cords. Possible causes of acute on dementia is vascular stroke or CNS infections or normal pressure hydrocephalus or brain injury or nutritional deficiencies, etc. Please consult your neurophysician for evaluation of correct cause of dementia and get treated accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
