Does Severe Calf Muscle Pain Of An Elderly Woman Need Medical Attention?

Hi, We have had my 76 year old mother on a trip to Yellowstone park. We have been traveling for about five hours and she is now experiencing a great deal of pain in her left calf. She also has varicose veins. Should I insist she goes to the doctor? She just wants to rest.

Thanks for your question on HCM

I do understand your concern

With such a presentation in my clinic, I would first rule out varicose veins and it is an important point of her left calf muscle pain and I may suggest you an USG scan for it and regarding treatment I suggest my patients [compression stockings]which is used whole day in legs and you can find it in any drug store. Besides it you need some life style modification like this -:

1)Do regular exercise

2)Do check her weight and height and calculate BMI if overweight try to reduce body weight by 5%

3)Eat a high fiber diet and do not take extra salt in your diet

4)If you are going to stand or sit for long time to change position regularly, if you are sitting in a flight for long 5 hours you will feel heaviness in legs so lift from your seat and walk for a while.

5)Elevate your legs while sleeping at night with the help of two pillows.

6)Apply [apple cider vinegar] on the skin over the varicose veins and gently massage the area. Do it every day before going to bed and again in the morning.

If you do not get any relief then go for surgical treatment
