Hi,

Yes, prolonged overuse of cortisone cream can lead to thinning of the skin, a condition known as corticosteroid-induced skin atrophy. This occurs due to the suppression of the body's natural production of steroids, which are responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of the skin. When cortisone cream is applied for an extended period, it weakens the collagen fibers in the skin, resulting in thinning and increased fragility.

As a result, the skin becomes more sensitive and prone to cracking, which can make it more susceptible to environmental factors such as cold weather and water. However, it is essential to note that other factors, such as age, genetics, and underlying medical conditions, can also contribute to skin thinning and increased sensitivity.

It is essential to follow your doctor's instructions and only use cortisone cream as prescribed. Overuse or misuse of the medication can lead to adverse effects and exacerbate existing conditions. If you have concerns about your skin's thinning and increased sensitivity, it is essential to speak with your doctor to determine the underlying cause and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
