Hello, I ve been taking doxycycline for acne for about four months. My period which is normally regular, has been late since I started taking the medication. I have been getting the symptoms of having a period when I m supposed to actually have one, but then it always seems to come late. Could that medicine be affecting when my period comes? I am sexually active and usually safe, but not always. I understand the consequences of unsafe sex, however I would like to know about the effects of the medication as well. Thank you!
Hi. I've gone through your scenario. I can understand your anxiety.
This medicine has side effects like darkening of your skin, nails, teeth, gums, diarrhoea and makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight.
So, in general chances of this drug delaying your period is very less. However, many other factors can affect your regular menstrual cycle such as Pregnancy, illness, stress, age and hormonal imbalances.
Better do a UPT ( urine pregnancy test) to rule out pregnancy and also have a consultation with your dermatologist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Get well soon.
Regards, Dr. Yogapriya V, General and family physician.
