Does The Acid Reflux Cause Cough With Mucus?

I have a bad cough and the Dr's can't figure it out. They now think it could be acid reflux, so I'm going to a Gasterologist. sp? Anyway, one of the problems is I have mucus in my throat, so when I sleep at night (sitting up on the couch) I tend to cough a lot. Any suggestions?

Acid reflux is a VERY common cause of cough (caused by the acid irritating the throat) but is not classically associated with reflux. Having mucus in your throat could indicate a sinus problem (allergies, sinusitis, post-nasal drip).

-You could try an over-the-counter antacid (such as Ranitidine or Famotidine) to treat your potential acid reflux.
-You could also try a non-drowsy anti-histamine such as Claritin or Zyrtec which may help if you have allergies.
