Does The Index Finger With Knuckle And Joint Injury Need Treatment?

Hi! I fractured my right index finger about 20 yrs ago. About 3 months ago, I began having pain in the middle joint, which I attributed to my new laptop touchpad, and I started using other fingers to rest the index finger . Last week, while swimming and playing in the pool, I accidentally slammed my finger into the concrete pool deck. Since then, one side of the knuckle is raised and the entire joint is very painful when moved, squeezed or bumped. I can fully extend the finger and bend it- it just hurts when I do so. I've been icing it and splinting it to avoid further injury. Is this something that requires an x-ray, or can I continue to treat at home? Thank you!
