Does Wearing Rubber Bands To Avoid Overbite Alter The Effectiveness Of Braces?

Hi i have a question for an orthodontist.
I am getting my braces off next thursday after 2 and a half years. I had a severe overbite and have been wearing rubber bands for almost the entire duration of my braces. 4 days ago I went in to my orthodontic office and they took the braces off of my back two molars in order to make the mold for my retainers (not permanent.) They told me not to wear my rubber bands for the last week. It has been 4 days and i have already noticed my overbite coming back rapidly. I want my teeth to be perfect when I get my braces off on thursday should i start wearing my rubber bands again until thursday? i would call my orthodontist but they are closed today.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM team.

Understanding your concern.

Yes wearing rubber band alter the effectiveness of braces .Rubber bands are used along with braces to move the teeth in desire direction where braces might not be able to do it alone .It makes the orthodondic treatment less time consuming .

Your orthodontist ask you to take of your bands in last week just to check if there is any relapse or in what direction he/she should proceed further ,i mean weather he/she should extend treatment or weather he/she should give you retainer and for what duration retainers should be given .

So i think you should not wear bands again until doctor will come to know the exact situation of your case.I would suggest you to visit your doctor as per your appointment and discuss what you have experienced after you take of your bands .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
