Does Zolpidem Treat Persistent Vegetative Stage (PVS)?
respected sir,
my query is regarding my uncle who had a cardiac arrest and fainted on road, incident happened one and half month ago,he was shifted to a nearby hospital and doctors were able to bring back his pulse but doctors told us that he may go into vegetative stage due to hypoxia during the incident and it did happen.is there any treatment available in India for persistent vegetative stage(PVS)?..i came across a pill named zolpidem and its ability to cure PVS,is it true?if yes,is this treatment available in India?and are there any alternate treatment for PVS
anxiously waiting for your reply.
Hello there! As of now there is no treatment of persistent vegetative state which has been shown to give consistent results. Quite a few drugs including zolpidem, levodopa, tricyclic antidepressants etc have been tried with varying outcomes. Persistent vegetative state is a result of lack of oxygen supply to the brain leading to severe brain damage. Recovery is slow and often partial. Treatment is generally supportive (oxygen, I/V fluids) in the ICU followed by rehabilitation in a specialized centre. Hope this answers your query In case you need further clarification do write in Best of luck!
