Done Fecal Analysis Test For Baby. Has Frequent Loose Stools. What Does It Mean?

Hi Doc, My baby is a 17 month old and have this fecalysis report as follows: Physical characteristics: Color: yellow Consistency: soft Microscopic findings: red blood cell: 1-2/hpf pus cells: 25-30/hpf others: bacteria=moderate Remarks: NO OVA OR PARASITES SEEN She s very active and seems okay. However, I am worried that she s been having frequent loose stools for 12 days and I m worried about the microscopic findings as well. What do these mean? Many thanks. Regards, Rovie

Hello there,

The fecal analysis was done for diarrheal episodes in your baby and the result is suggestive of stool infection as it shows numerous pus cells. Since the report shows the presence of bacteria, you can proceed further and get a stool culture test done for her to know specifically which organism is involved. Appropriate antibiotics can be started for a period of at least 7 days and hopefully your baby will be fine. In the meantime, please ensure proper handwashing and strict hygiene when feeding your child. Give him only clean and distilled water and ensure there are no signs of dehydration like lethargy, dry eyes and skin and decreased urine output. If the condition worsens further, please show him to your Pediatrician without delay.

Take care.
