Done Urinalysis. Have Diabetes And Hypertension. What Do The Results Mean?

hi, my mom had a urinalysis done and came back with results of many epithelial cells, few puss cells in clumps, few rbc , few renal epithelial cells. she is diabetic (fasting sugar is 6.65mmol/l. HbA1C=9.1%) and hypertensive (average 130/90). creatinine clearance is 85ml/min. what does the urinalysis result mean? also, ultrasound of pancreas show echofree cystic nodule in pancreatic head. what does that mean? thank you very much for your help

Hi,
Welcome to HCM
She is Diabetic and Hypertensive , it is important to know duration that is how long she is having thes problems.
Urine analysis may indicate Urinary tract infection which is common in diabetics and you have not mentioned about albumin is present or not as presence points towards kidney involvement like Nephropathy.
Her Hb A1 c report is high which indicate her sugar is not well controlled.
A cystec nodule in pancreas at head needs to be further investigated by CT Scan or MRI to know what it is as in head we should rule out malignancy.
Do not wait for long just take care of her.
Good Luck.'

Diabetologist Dr. Madhuri Patil's  Response
Hi there.

The urine analysis shows your mother has got infection of the urinary tract. In case of presence of a few RBC in the urine indicate this infection can be quite up in the tract and needs immediate and prolonged anti-biotic treatment. Please get her Urine culture and sensitivity tests done otherwise her good renal function (eGFR- 85 ml/min) can deteriorate.
Regarding the pancreatic cystic nodule, how big it is? what are the margins like? This information will help in making diagnosis and further management of your mother. If you have a very good Gastroenterologist nearby, do go and show his/ her this report and he/she will clinically examine and opine on the issue.
Sugars are certainly high and that is one of the reasons for accelerated urinary tract infection, if not taken care right away, the infection can spread rapidly. Please do see a good physician for appropriate antibiotic treatment to be started right away and for sugar control.
I hope you got your answer. Please get back for any related query. Take care.
