Ear Pain On Yawning, Ringing In Ears, Hearing Loss. Related To TMJ?

hi. i have been experiencing pain in my left ear when i yawn, what i think is bad breath and occasional ringing in that ear and feeling like i m talking in a well. i also don t think i hear very well in that ear either. my dentist has told me i have TMJ but so far i am not wearing any type of mouth guard for that. could this be related to the TMJ? thanks!

Hello and thank you for your question.
Based on what you described it could possibly be signs of TMJ disorder. The jaw joint has a small disk inside that allows your jaw to slide freely open. When you yawn, you could be hyperextending this joint and causing a pull and pressure on the tendons resulting in pain. Ringing in the ear is called tinnitus and does affect people with TMD. The ringing can be caused by inflammation of the joint that then applies pressure to the inner workings of the ear. I would also recommend that you get checked by an ENT doctor to rule out the possibilities of inner ear disorders. I would recommend applying warm moist heat to your jaw joints 3 times a day for 1 hour, 20 minutes on with 10 minute breaks in between and try taking NSAIDs to reduce swelling. Yawn with your tongue stuck to the roof of your mouth to prevent it from opening too large. I recommend having a nightguard made by your dentist if you have a history of bruxism (nocternal teeth grinding).

Best wishes and good health

Hello,
In case of TMJ disorders, pain is present in and around ear which may spread to face and tenderness of jaw muscles is present. In case of TMJ disorders, patient will have pain in opening the jaw wide, chewing and while yawning and along with that clicking sound is present while opening the mouth wide and head ache or neck ache is present. TMJ disorder occurs due to clenching or grinding of teeth or occurs due to malocclusion. Without clinical examination, it is difficult to give definite diagnosis. If pain is because of TMJ disorder, then physical therapy, muscle relaxants and surgery may also be required. You can refer to your oral surgeon.

HI,

Thanks for asking the query,

As per your clinical history and symptoms it could be a sign of TMJ disorder.
TMJ disfunction can lead to pain around the ears, tenderness in the jaw,and can lead to difficulty in mouth opening and pain on chewing.

I would suggest you to visit to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and get a clinical evaluation done, take an OPG radiograph.

TMJ disfunction can be treated by inflammatory medications, heat therapy, rest, mouth excercises, and in some cases splint therapy can be given.

Hope this helps out.
