Epilepsy, Psychosis,depression, Refusal To Take Medication.

Dear Doctor, My sister suffers from epilepsy and sycosis she is under hospital care. But the sycosis causes her to go into depression and she hears God telling her not to take her medication . We have some help from a medical therapist but they can’t do much because the epilepsy causes background seizures. What can we do when she wont take her medication my mother is at her wits end. This is the hardest part, once she takes her meds it is fine. Gerard

Hello,

Temporal lobe epilepsy is a variety of epilepsy which is associated with psychiatric symptoms with hallucinations and delusions, anxiety and depression. If she does not cooperate, treatment can be given without her knowledge. Injectable drugs are available. Syrups which can be mixed with food can be given for psychosis. If psychosis is treated to a reasonable level, she may cooperate with you. Do not lose hope and surely giving treatment is the hardest part of the job. Actually, psychosis is part of the seizure pathology. It is better to give treatment as an in patient.
