Extremely Lethargic, Confused, Dizzy, Weak After Taking Adco Retic. What To Do ?

My Mother, has taken Adco Retic now for probably two days and is extremely lethargic, confused, dizzy, and weak. I have read that these are all side effects of this drug. However my Mom has been in bed for 24 hours whereas usually she is energetic and up and about. Her GP had diagnosed after blood test results that she had high cholesterol and high blood pressure. My Mom is 67 years old and this diagnosis of ill health is the first. The GP had also said that she had had a heart attack.

Now...my question what should we do? have her see a different doctor? or simply stop the medication? and then treat the high blood pressure and high cholesterol how?
Would appreciate your assistance.

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Adco retic 's ingredients are amyloride + hydrochlorthiazide.
The side effects of amyloride are confusion, hypokaelimia, papresthesis, weakness and cramps.
More or less side effects of hydrochlorthiazide are same .
All complains or symptoms are related to these side effects.
But once drug stopped side effects disappear within 3-4 days .
But your mother is still suffering , so this may be due to some disease.
Consult your doctor and get E C HO , blood for lipid profile and serum cretinine phosphokinase for heart ailments.
Good luck.

Hi

Thanks for your query to Health Care Magic

Adco Retic is a combination of two diuretic drugs i.e. 5 mg Amiloride hydrochloride and 50 mg Hydrochlorothiazide. All diuretics promote excretion of water from body by production of excess urine.

Your mother is feeling weak and lethargic because of loss of fluids from her body as side effects of drug because she is prescribed 2 diuretic drugs together at the same time.

Usually any anti hypertensive drugs take time to control the blood pressure and adjust to patient’s body but any such anti hypertensive drug which is causing too many side effect needs to be re-evaluated and changed.

Adco Retic is mainly taking care of her high blood pressure, now coming to the second medication condition you mother is facing i.e. High Cholesterol levels, unfortunately this condition is not addressed in her treatment at all.

I feel it will be better that you visit a physician and get her re-evaluated but till you visit the physician continue using Adco Retic if the blood pressure is too high. For Cholesterol ask her to avoid red meat and egg yolks. let her take lots of green vegetables.

Hope that answers your query

Wishing your mother health life ahead.

Take Care :)
