Feeling Of Sand In Hair, No Itching. What Could It Be?

Hi there, In the last few months this has happened three times - I scratch my head and it feels like there s sand in my hair. I thought maybe it was my puppy jumping on me after playing in the dirt, but it happened again today and I shook it all out onto a white piece of paper. It s pitch black, grainy, almost like charcoal - there was about a teaspoon s worth. It s not bugs, and my head is not itchy! It s always concentrated in one spot on my head. What could it be?? My partner doesn t have it and i have checked my hair for lice - doesn t seem to be that either... PLEASE HELP - it s freaking me out!

Hi Nikki,

Thanks for writing in.
The condition you are suffering is Seborrheic dermatitis.
It is a infective condition.

Treatment can be topical antifungals, steroids, minoxidil etc
Antifungals and steroids in topical form are very safe and effective.
Also oral ketoconazole for 2-3 weeks is extremely helpful.
Few scalp treatments may be required .
They are available at dermatology clinics.

Also supportive oral tablets containing biotin and multivitamis can be helpful.

Hope this helps.

Regards
