Irregular periods can contribute to infertility. Infertility however, is only diagnosed after a year of trying of conceive.
It would not be diagnosed after less of 3 mths trying. If your periods were previously regular, they may normalise.
The reasons for delayed periods are: (1) PCOS - polycystic ovarian syndrome which is diagnosed after two of the following are present: (a) cysts in the ovaries on ultrasound (b) irregular periods (c) signs and symptoms of increased level of male hormones (2) emotional stress (3) physical stress or extreme physical activity (4) inadequate diet (5) high prolactin level (6)abnormal level of thyroid hormone
There are different causes of difficulty conceiving but your doctor may consider investigating you only after one year.
I hope this helps
