Fell Down Stairs. Slipped On Back And Tailbone. Pain In Bottom Of Spine. Cannot Sit. Suggestions?

Hi, my partner fell down some stairs last night under the use of alcohol. Hes slipped on his back and tailbone and is in lots of pain when trying to move. I have had a feel and he has a lump on the bottem of his spine. It is very painful to touch, he can not sit on his bottem and whilst trying to get up and down he is in constant pain. What could this be? Is it serious

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
It appears that due to hard hit there is possibility of having fracture of tail bone and some damage to lumbo-sacral vertebrae.
Go to ER and get x-ray or CT scan done.
After report they will go for treatment accordingly.
Meanwhile give him NSAID medicine to give temporary relief from pain.
Ok and take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Your partner is suffering with Coccydynia (pain in the tail bone) which resulted due to a fall.

An xray of the sacrum is needed to establish any fracture of the coccyx

The conservative line of management of this condition is as follows-
* Sit on a doughnut-shaped pillow or wedge (V-shaped) cushion
* Lean forward while sitting down
* Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil)
* Apply heat or ice to the affected area
*Physical therapy involving strengthening of pelvic area muscles , stimulation with ultrasound therapy

If your symptoms are not resolving with the above measures, consult an orthopedic surgeon for further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
