Fever, High RBC. Why? Fair To Go For A Kidney Ultrasound?

I have a 2 week old patient who was admitted at 3 days old for fever with temperature of 38.1 C once. FBC, CRP normal. UFEME (staright cath in and out) showed RBC of 300, Epithelial cells of 20 and WBC of 50. Urine culture was mixed growth with 2000, and epithelia cells of 20. Nitrite was negative. As I still think is is contaminated, I advised parents how to clean and come back today with urine analysis, urine culture. If RBC is still high, what could be the reason for that as she was catheterised more than a week ago. Is it fair to request for a kidney ultrasound? Thank you very much. Ofelia

Hi Ofelia,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Presence of RBC, WBC in urine is suggestive of urinary problems such as urine infection, trauma to urinary tract, stone, and some growths inside the tract.
As there is fever, it is associated with infection.

You can go for an ultrasound abdomen and pelvis to look for any structural abnormalities like obstruction, stone, growth.

hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
