Finger Smashed In Door, Nail Colour Changes To Yellow And Brown, No Pain

My 3 year old son had his finger smashed in the door about five days ago. There is no ongoing pain but the fingernail has now started to turn a different color. Originally, it went very dark red under the nail but returned to a normal color the next day. Now, several days on, the outer edge of the nail is brown and the rest of the nail is yellow. Should this be taken to a doctor to be treated or is this the normal process of healing?
