For How Long Does A Cortisone Shot Remain Effective?
I had a cortisone injection in my arthritic hip 2 days ago. I can walk without a limp, but I feel the usual pain in my groin and thigh that I had until taking Ibuprofen. I am trying not to take any pain meds for at least a week, so I can see how the cortisone is working. Is this a good plan? What is the average time that a cortisone shot is effective? Thank you.
Cortisone injections are used to treat inflammation and in turn reduces the pain due to inflammation. Usually the effect on injection in joints can last for up to six months. But its effect may be less, if the pathology in the joint is severe enough to subside the beneficiary effect of the cortisone injection.
The cortisone shot reduces the inflammation of the joint and reduces the pain. In initial stages of arthritis where there is inflammation of the articular capsule or articular surface inflammation, cortisone injection has maximum effect. But in severe conditions such as bony erosion, the effect lasts for only short duration. Imaging of the joint helps to identify the extent of pathology.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
