For What Reason Methadone Was Originally Manufactured?
yes my brother and I are debating the orginial use and/or manufacturing of methadone ..... I was told that it was originally made in WWII for our injured soliders because it was a cheap pain medicine to give to them.... My brother insinits it was originally manufactured for heroin withdrawls... yet I was told by my doctor that it was discovered after the fact that it helps heroin adicts......
Methadone was first synthesized in 1939 at the pharmaceutical laboratories of the I.G. Farbenkonzern, in Germany. It was the product of a long and continuous research in the area of synthetic medicines to reduce pain, that this laboratory had been occupied in. However, methadone was not extensively used during the World War II. After Germany lost the war, the records of the research work of the lab were confiscated by the USA and the rights to this medicine were bought by Eli-Lilly which began to produce it as an analgesic. It was only in 1963 that Dr Vincent Dole and Dr Marie Nyswander , who were doctors at the Rockefeller University in New York City, discovered its potential in helping people with heroin dependence.
