Frequent Nausea. Feels Better On Exercising. Anxiety Related?

My 19 year old daughter, 5 5 and 112# has been having frequent nausea . She told me yesterday that it is relieved by exercising. I have worked in the medical field for over 20 years and never heard of such a thing. I wonder if it s possible that her belly problems are anxiety related...she just finished her first year of college...and the exercise takes her mind off of it. Does this make sense?

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

Anxiety can manifest itself as psychological as well as physical symptoms. The physical manifestations of anxiety can vary widely and can literally present with symptoms of any system in the body. Moreover, when the mind is anxious / in a state of arousal, there can be a heightened perception of sensations and stimuli, which would otherwise be ignored by a non-anxious person. So, it does make sense that your daughter's stomach problems could be a manifestation of underlying anxiety.

Please encourage her to engage in activities which will keep her body and mind occupied and active. She can also try relaxation therapies like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, etc. If her symptoms are frequent and disabling, then I would advise her to seek professional help from a psychiatrist.

Wish you all the best.
