Frequent Periods, Anemia. Normal Hormone Levels. Suggested Pelvic Ultrasound. Thoughts?
Between May and July my period went from a 4 week cycle to a 3 week cycle, then my last period came a week and a half after I finished my previous period. I am 44, I thought I might be starting menopause but my doctor check my hormone levels which appear to be normal, but I now have anemia (likely due to the frequent periods). My periods last about 7 days (the last 3 days are pretty light). My doctor has requested a pelvic ultrasound, what is she looking for?
Hi, It is true that as per your age, you may entering peri-menopause, but as the hormone levels are normal, it has been excluded. Anemia is caused by the excessive blood loss due to the frequent periods. Your doctor might be suspecting some ovarian pathology or uterine cause to be disclosed through the pelvic ultrasound. A trans-vaginal sonogram would be better as pelvic organs are better visualized, especially the uterine cavity. You should also get your thyroid profile done as disturbances can reflect in menstrual disturbances. Hope your query is answered. Wish you good health.
