Get Cramps In Calf Under Plaster. Would Putting Weight On It Cause Damage ?

Hi. I broke my 5th metatarsal in my foot on Friday. I have a plaster cast on, but having ir replaced by a stronger one on Monday. Will I damage the healing process if I put weight on it (it does cause pain)? Also I am getting cramps in my calf under the plaster. Is this something to worry about or normal? I do not normally suffer from cramps. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this fracture. Putting weight on it just a few days after surgery would not be the best of ideas. It can in fact delay the healinga nd may even aggravate the fracture line. Please, do not. For the cramps, if they are severe, it may signal that the cast is to tight and need to be adjusted. Should it just be minimal pains, there is no need to worry and more so because it is going to be changed pretty soon.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications should need be.
