Got Hit On The Head. Raised Ridge On The Top. Hurts To Touch. No Symptoms Of Concussion. Time To Heal?

I hit my head a few days ago, and now I have a raised ridge on top of my head and it hurts to touch that part of my head and the area around it. I don't have any symptoms of a concussion, just the pain when I touch my head. Do you know how long it will take until the ridge and pain go away? Is this something I should get checked out?

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description of symptoms, I suspect that you could have suffered a SUBGALEAL HEMATOMA (Scalp hematoma) over the outer cortex of the skull. This is a benign condition and most of these resolves spontaneously within 2-3 weeks.

If the hematoma is tense and is expanding with time, it may need a surgical drainage.

Use of Ice packing over the swelling will alleviate the pain and will reduce the size of the hematoma as well.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

From your description, you seem to have a scalp swelling. If you had loss of consciousness, vomiting, inability to balance while walking or severe headache, you need urgent medical attention and probably a CT scan brain.

If you have no other problems other than pain to touch, then you may need to apply anti inflammatory ointment in the area. If there is any minimal bleed under the skin, it should resolve in a weeks time.

Hope this helps
