Hacking, Dry Cough After Taking Lisinopril Prescribed For Pre Hypertension. Alternatives?

I have a hacking, dry cough that started around the same time as the Lisinopril I was prescribed for pre-hypertension. It is bad enough that people are questioning me about it. It seems worse at bedtime. I am tired of this and if this COULD be from the Lisinopril, I am off of it starting tomorrow. There is no mucous just constant hacking, especially when I am trying to talk. If indeed this IS the Lisinopril, what else can I take for mild hypertension that won't cause this? Thanks.

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M.. Forum.
You are having dry , hacking cough and this cough started simultaneously with intake of lisinopril .
The side effects of LISINOPRIL are as follow, hypotension, renal failure, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, hyperkalaemia, angioedema.
Only angioedema may produce cough ( dry ).
As your only attention is over lisinpril ,so come out from this dilemma .
In my opinion lisinopril is not responsible for your dry , hacking cough.
Few things you have not mentioned in your query as age, sex, as these two factors are very important for any diagnosis.
Also mention the exact value of blood pressure as type of B P is very important .
Transient B P (HIGH) may be due to anxiety ( when doctor check a patient i.e. white collar B P ).
So please upload the lipids , sugar reports along B P .
Alternatively you can consult a physician and get his opinion.
Good luck.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Venkat Sivayogi 's  Response
Hi,
welcome to HCM,

Dry cough is the most common side effect of ACE inhibitors like Lisinopril. But we should evaluate in your case whether its really due those pills or some other cause.

If you have this cough since the usage of Lisinopril and its purely dry cough ,then it can assumed due to these pills only.

You better consult your treating physiscian and discuss with him.

There are alternatives also, known as Angiotensin-receptor blockers ARB's like telmisartan, losartan, olmesartan.

Regards,
Dr.sivayogi
