Had A Brain Stem Stroke 5 Years Ago. Am I At Risk For Another One?

I am post brain stem stroke almost five years. I have recovered very well I do have some issues but you cannot tell I have had a stroke. I was 43 at the time and I am now 48, my big fear is not living to a long old age. At the time of my stroke, everything I read said 5 to 7 years before I could have another one and not survive.

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Generally speaking if you have had a stroke you are someone who will always have a higher risk for stroke than the average population. A higher risk percentage doesn't mean that it will happen though, preventive medication can go a long way to reduce that risk and you may enjoy many other healthy years.
Of course this is a very general discussion. Stroke has many different causes and risk of a recurrence depends on the cause and what can be done about it. If say the stroke was due to an artery dissection after a trauma then recurrence risk would be very low. Same would go for other removable factors such as drug use, giving birth (you do not even state your gender) etc. So more details regarding tests you had to find the cause, medication used, would be needed to be more specific.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The chances of recurrent stroke depends upon cause of stroke.
Cardiac cause, hypertension, diabetes, lipid abnormalities are common cause and needs to be evaluated and managed.
The treatment should continue life Long.
Brain stem stroke are more dangerous than other region stroke but control of these factors lessens the likelihood.
