Had A Delivery. Unable To Breath, No Seizures. On Valparin. Do They Have Side Effects?
Hello Doctor,
I have a 2 year old daughter, who was delivered full term normal using forceps, but she did not breath for first 10 min. We admitted her to NICU, where she had seizures and after that till now, we have not noticed any seizure. We are presently giving Gardenal - 2.5 ml. One of the doctor asked us change it to Valparin 2ml twice daily. Could you please explain the differences in Gardenal & Valparin medicine and their effects on the kid.
Thanks in advance.
Regards, Madhukar.
Gardenal is Phenobarbitone and it is used to stop seizures but it is very sedating and behavioral side effects may be seen with gardenal.
Valprin is sodium valporate. It is a broad spectrum drug for seizures. It don't cause sedation. It is recommended for children. Gardenel is an older drug and currently it is used mainly in acute conditions while valporate is used for mainly control of seizures.
thanks
Dr.Seikhoo Bishnoi
