Had A Surgery For Locked Ankle And Torn Tibial Tendon. Why Is There Swelling And Recurrence Of Lock Again?

I had a fracture in left ankle and had surgery this past April. after a few physical therapies, ankle locked--I was crippled for months--no doctor knew what to do, but one. I had surgery in August and October: a three inch bone fragment was removed from ankle joint, torn deltoid ligament and torn tibial tendon repaired in August. Then in October, hardware was removed as I told metal plate was wrong for my foot; peroneal nerve area cleaned up and above all:ankle joint reset cause evidently it was tipped on an angle. Much to my new surgeon's and doctor's surprise--by November 11th I was walking and swimming and really had Pt since mid October. everything was progressing--then this past week--limping and now my ankle is locked again. It is not swelling or inner stitches still dissolving--it's locked. The good, new surgeon is on his way to India for a medical mission trip and I feel by now--I need another opinion, but hardly any doctors know about locked ankles.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The cause for locking episodes in the ankle joint could be either due to soft tissue impingement inside the joint/any loose body (bony or cartilagenous).

An MRI scan of the involved joint is needed to pin point the exact cause for your locking episode.

The definitive management of the condition depends on the condition diagnosed.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
