Had Fever, Loss Of Appetite, Cough, Pneumonia, Flu. What Can I Give Her?
My daughter, 3 years old, has had a fever since last night, it broke temporarily. Its back, full force (steady at 103). She isn t eating and only drinks when you force her. She has also had a cough for 2 Weeks. We had a friends of the family come down with pneumonia , so I fear that or the flu . I understand you cannot give anything for viruses . What can I do for her??
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.
The high grade fever associated with cough is suggestive of a respiratory infection. This again could be a viral infection, but considering the high grade fever and the debilitating effects, it is likely to be due to a lung infection or a pneumonia.
The first priority at this time should be to keep your child well hydrated, since small children can easily go into dehydration. You can give her paracetamol syrup every 6 hours for the fever and also give cold fomentations to bring down the temperature. It is important not to let the fever peak too high since, in some children, it can cause febrile seizures. If the high fever continues to persist or her intake continues to be poor, then I would advise you not to hesitate taking her to a hospital since she may need further evaluation and more intensive treatment. Here are the danger signs which you will have to watch for:
- Breathing difficulty or wheezing
- Lethargy, drowsiness or confusion
- Dehydration
If any of them are present, then you need to seek urgent medical attention.
Wish you all the best.
Regards,
Dr. Sheeba Stephen
