Had Hysterectomy, Bladder Repair. Vagina Closed. Trying To Get Estrogen Into Vagina By Placing Tampon With Estrace On It. Correct Solution?
I had a hysterectomy and bladder repair on 10/23/13. I went to my 4 week check and my vagina had closed. I'm not sure how this happens and my Dr. said she had seen this before but not very often. My question is what would cause this? I'm a very active and healthy 59 year old. My Dr. placed a tampon with Estrace on it to try to get more estrogen into my vagina. I have been doing the same thing nightly since Monday, day of my appointment. Everything is very tender and I just want to make sure it stays open. Suggestions would be appreciated as well.
Hello Thanks for your query. Yes, what you describe is quite rare. Due to hormonal deficiency, and the trauma of surgery, the epithelium between the 2 surfaces of the vagina gets abraded. This then leads to formation of adhesions. The two walls get stuck to each other due to adhesions and apposition of the fibrous tissue. Supplying local estrogen to it will help in vascularization and estrogenization of the epithelial surfaces, leading to break up of the adhesions. Frankly, chances are high that it will get fibrosed, and close up again. You might require a small minor surgery to separate the adhesions . Take care.
