Had Incisional Mesh Hernia Repairs. Have Frequent Urination, Numbness In Incision Area. What Is The Solution?

While in the Navy, I had two incisional mesh hernia repairs. The second repair was to fix the first repair. I do not recall if they were inguinal, or hiatal. Both surgeries occurred within a 9 month period about 13 years ago. Almost immediately, after the second surgery, I have had non stop issues with frequent urination. Is this a common problem related to hernia repairs? Is there anything that can be done to remedy the problem? I also have permanent numbness around the incision is this also normal?

Hi and thanks for the query,
Numbness in the area after surgery could imply some trauma to the nerves around this area. The nerves that supply this particular area have common branches originating from the whole genital region, called the urogenital nerve. Frequent urinating could imply problems with the bladder innervation. Depending on when you started experiencing these symptom, it might be necessary to exclude other common causes of such symptoms. Diabetes and a urinary tract infection should also be checked for. Kind regards
