Had Unprotected Sex. Burning Urination, Itching And Discomfort. What Is The Cause Behind It?

I am 60 yrs old, and had unprotected sex the other night night (last intercourse was 3 months ago). I had slight bleeding show on toilet paper next morning. I had extremely sore skin on vaginal outter skin. Urination cause unbelievable burning and pain. I diagnosed myself as having a yeast infection... Extreme itching and discomfort. I started monistat yesterday.

Last year my Dr. prescribed Vagifem estradiol inserts. For no reason, I stopped those a few months ago ..so I assume my tissues are in need of that medicine and I will start them again. Can you help me understand what happened to me? why the sudden burst of yeast infection? Did I catch it from him? Thanks

Hi thanks for your question.
No, this is not yeast infection, most probably this is urinary tract infection(UTI) caused by bacteria. Since you are a postmenopausal women and vagina in post menopausal women is usually dry and lacks lubrication. Due to dryness of vagina you have got soreness on vaginal outer skin during sex.UTI do occur during sex and more so in postmenopausal women as vaginal is dry and vaginal Ph is no longer acidic which prevent infection.
You can continue with vagifem prescribed to you by your Doctor, in consultation with her. This will prevent dryness of your vagina and decrease chances of getting UTI
Hope this answers your question.
