Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Has Chronic Cough Increased My Blood Pressure Or Vice Versa?
I have had a chronic cough for over one year. My blood pressure, usually normal for a 70 year old, has recently increased. Can a cough cause an increase in blood pressure, or can an increase in blood pressure cause the cough? I am exercising daily and controlling my weight, normal for my height.
An increase in blood pressure doesn't cause cough, although some blood pressure medicine may cause chronic cough. Coughing while measuring the blood pressure (BP) , if measured in automatic sphygmomanometer, may cause a wrong measurement, and therefore lead to a wrong evaluation of the BP. However, the same reason that causes the chronic cough can also be a reason for increasing the BP. My advice would be to measure the BP with a manual sphygmomanometer and look for a physician if it mantains elevated.
