Have UTI Test Result, Positive Leukocytes, Negative Nitrites, Taking Cap, No Change In Results. What Is Going On?
I was having UTI symptoms 3 weeks ago. Used the Walgreen's brand UTI test strips at home. Test showed purple color for leukosytes (positive) and negative for nitrites. Called doctor and they put me on nitrofurantoin 100 mg for 7 days. Retested with strip after that course and tested positive again for leukosytes. Called doctor and asked for Cipro 500 mg which worked once before when I had a UTI. Took that for 5 days. Just retested again today and leukosytes are still positive and nitrites negative. What's going on? Are these home tests accurate?
It is quite possible that the test is not accurate. The most important ways to determine if you are still infected would be the presence of symptoms and if you desire, you can also send urine to the lab for formal analysis though this is not normally required or suggested if a person is symptom free.
If you are no longer experiencing the symptoms related to a urinary tract infection then it is likely that it has resolved, if you are still symptomatic then urine should be sent to the lab to determine which specific bacteria is causing the infection and which antibiotics it is sensitive and resistant to.
I hope this helps
